For Student Atheletes ( STRIDE )

The central purpose of the STRIDE program is to provide student athletes with the necessary enhancement to enable them in receiving the full benefits of their collegiate experience. The program is aimed at promoting the academic and personal growth of the student athletes. STRIDE consists of weekly Success Training workshops as well as individual counseling.

WEEKLY SEMINARS

The following is compilation of the seminars/workshops topics to be discussed when the program implemented. These seminars present proven academic and personal enhancement techniques and strategies. All seminars are interactive and rely on the audience involvement to ascertain success. The chosen workshop/seminar topic reflects the needs to student athletes desirous of achieving the potential.

TOPICS

Planning for Academic Success: Revising the Plan of Attack

This seminar demonstrates how one can critically evaluate and modify a plan of attack developed for academic success. The significance of time management, class attendance, study habits, and other academic relevant issues is elucidated.

Overcoming Procrastination

Many students suffer from the "putting off until tomorrow" syndrome known as procrastination. This interactive workshop examines types of procrastination that most individuals engage and explanations as to how these personally debilitating and self-esteem lowering activities become the behaviors of choice for many students. Strategies for working through these issues are presented.

Career Exploration

This workshop examines the necessity of career exploration and strategies that can be utilized in making career choices.

Goals & Organization: The Keys to Success

The seminar presents information on how to become a better organized and more goal-oriented student athlete. Presenter will discuss proven goal setting and organization techniques.

Stress Management for Athletes

Student athletes have a great amount of responsibility as it relates to meeting the demands of their professors, classmates, co-athletes, coaches and family and friends in their hometowns. This presentation will inform student athletes of Stress Management techniques. These customized techniques are designed with the student athlete in mind.

Cultural Sensitivity Training

We live in a Pluralistic society where interacting with diverse groups of people is inevitable. Communicating requires awareness of individual and groups differences. Information about how diverse groups can better function together will be presented in a timely manner.

No Dope Drug Prevention

This seminar explores the lethal combination of substance usage and athletics.

Professional Athletics Hour

A professional athlete will discuss strategies and techniques they have had to employ to become a high attaining student as well as a professional athlete.

The Power of a Positive Attitude

Individuals often become extremely hard on themselves during periods of high stress (e.g. final exam time). Techniques and strategies on how to disallow life stressors from becoming overwhelming are explicated. Other topics that are discussed include: time management, test-taking skills, test anxiety, reading skills enhancement, note-taking, relationships, career planning.
